It is very important to dress appropriately for court. The old advice is to dress as though you were going to church; however, in this day and age, that could mean jeans. Perhaps a better rule of thumb is to dress as though you were going to church, in the 50s. What does that look like?

If you stick to the 5 C's, you can't go wrong:

Clean - Make sure that whatever you are wearing is clean and wrinkle-free. Make sure the Judge knows that you are able to take care of yourself, and your children.
Conservative -Though it may seem sexist, it is frowned upon to show skin in court. Avoid cleavage, bare midriffs, mini-skirts, and tank tops. Court is not a place for jeans and casual wear. Demonstrate your respect for the judicial process by wearing business attire.
Correct Size - Your clothes should fit. Bulging seams and baggy lines will attract unwanted attention.
Closed Toe Shoes - The courthouse is no place for flip flops or sandals.
[for men] Coat & Tie- Gentlemen, put on your nicest suit. Make sure it is clean, pressed, and that it fits. If you don't have a suit, a sports coat, dress shirt, and trousers will fit the bill.

Trust us. Your day in court is an important day. You want to look your best.
